bus lust plus other random things.
after looking at a few sites i just realized again, how much i want a kombi. to be specific, a brakelight engine lid model or perhaps in my dreams a barndoor.
i'm not sure what it is but i seem to prefer the look of earlier vw's regardless of the model (the possible exception being type 4's) not nessecerally the earliest of each type but early enough. i guess it is the simplicity of the earlier versions. to be honest a 63 isn't my favorate year (that honor falls to 1956)(though 51/2 is right up there)
but then again i have a 63 and it is a ragtop plus the car has a lot of meaning to me. it is probably one of the first large projects in my life that i finished. i'm using the term finished loosly, but it was running and registered which was a long way from where i got it. since then i have changed and grown up a lot (not that it was hard to mature from where i was) but it still holds meaning.
as an aside, i went up there a few weeks ago and spent a little quality time with the car. plus get some pics of what work the body needs etc. while i was there i sat in the drivers seat and pulled the roof back (i didn't make engine noises... out loud anyway). the thing that if really brought home is how much my ass has expanded since i last drove the car in 2000. if i'm not careful i'll have to add a full set of carbonfibre panels into the budget to balance out the weight that i have added...
as far as progress not much to say. one of my presents arrived in the mail yeaterday, it always feels like christmas when parcels turn up. Marnie brought it up to me at work, i think that one of my collegues had a somewhat frightening insight into how much i love my toys. he couldn't believe the expression on my face as i was opening the package (it helped that i had forgotten what it was so was even more excited). he equated it to his 5 or 6 year old nephews at christmas.
you would think that they would have got it when i started asking multipule customers every day if they knew of any old vw's or bits there of in thier neck of the woods. or when i would pull some random bit out of my pocket that i was carring around with me. (today it was a 36hp exhaust valve. i really like the way they have the VW logo, a vw part no, a manufactures logo and thier part no all stamped in between the keeper grove and the stemtip).
i think that i mentioned that i got a lead on a few beetles from a lady at work. i got the pics and they were late models. one complete L model super (1303 for you european types) and the shell/body panels of a 68-70 model, i think it was a semiauto by the holes in the rear inner guards. pity that it wasn't the complete car, either in the white of the shell of the blue ofthe body panels, both nice colours. through a few choice bits along with a little work and you could made a really nice driver out of a 1500.
