a fairly quiet weekend.

not much happened but i thought i'd write a bit anyway.

i'm currently trying to flog off a heap of stuff and was supposed to photograph some of it and pack some other stuff to get shipping prices. with the way i have put it off you'd think i didn't like money. :)

i intended to go for a drive on saturday but life (and the better half) had other plans. i did get to drop in to my friend just out of town for a chat, but couldn't stay as i took my 6yo and he went totally bezerk so i had to leave. i was super grumpy over that one.

i went out there agan this afternoon to drop him some bits he needs and pull some bits i need off a parts car. while i was doing so i noticed amongst the random crap under the bonnet, a australian accessory door pull handle. needless to say we struck a deal and it is home safe and sound.

the reason i was so keen to get it is a few months ago i was poking about in my grandmothers shed (i have a beetle stored there) when i spotted a hinged handle in a box of random stuff. it rang a bell as i was sure i had seen a set in a vw before. a month or so later i was checking out a guy i knows' oval and it had a pair fitted... when i got back to armidale i dropped up to my grandmothers and she gave it to me. a quick search on the samba showed a pair advertised as australian accessories. then a post on a forum had a number of people saying that they had cars with them fitted. within a few days a picture of a pair of these handles in a dealer accessory display was posted. that kind of sealed the deal, but i only had one.

i was really surprised to find the handle as i thought that all the accessories etc had been picked looong ago (nearly all pre '98, before i even heard about my friend and his collection of dead vw's).

another tidbit of info for anyone who cares. fuel gauges.

the later 6V fuel gauges have the 1/4 and 3/4 mark evenly spaced from the full and empty but the first of the factory fitted ones have a large space between the empty and 1/4 mark. i'm sure there are those out there who would know the exact date of the change but i don't. i can say though that i have a 7.61 gauge with the early spacing and a 9.61 gauge with the later spacing. the odd thing is they both have the same part number on the back. over the years there was a difference in the bezels as well, but both of these gauges have the early type.

i'd love to add pics to make this clearer but can't find the correct cord to connect my wifes camera to the computer. i can find the cord for mine but i bounced it twice a few weeks ago and it doesn't exactly work now :D

My next project..
back in the day

A great score on the handle - I only read that particular post the other day Got to say that it looks much better than the empi style ones you usually see and looks more like a handle should.

The fuel guage difference is an interesting thing, it almost seems to me that they did it to improve 'fuel economy'
