G'day VW Challengers
For those coming to the World of Speed this September to race or watch the 36hp and Big Block VW Challengers, FREE camping will be available at "bend in the road", which is located on the only road to and from the salt. Camping at the future site for the Bonneville Speedway Museum on the east side of Wendover will also be available. "Bend" is located about one mile north on the Bonneville Speedway exit about three miles east of Wendover on I-80 and is situated on mud-flats amongst the sage brush. If it is not rainy or threatening rain, it is a great location and when I camp out, I too stay at the "Bend" if the weather is DRY. But if it rains, even a little bit, the flats turn to slick clay mud and you will be stranded, even if your vehicle is just 10 feet from the pavement. Getting pulled out by the local Mud-Cat can cost $400.00 so watch the weather before deciding to camp there.
Due to the threat of mud with rain, many folks have taken to the higher scrub areas a mile above "Bend" to the north west. You can find this area at the "Bend" by turning left on the paved road which heads off to the foothills. You will have plenty of companions camping their.
Now Less Than 70 Days Away-GET READY……………………..
Sept 7-10 World of Speed (130 MPH Club and 36hp & BB Challenge). One mile standing start time trial (along with unlimited top speed streamliners and hot rods on the long eight mile course) at the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats, Wendover, UT. All VW racers and spectators welcome. For information visit www.saltflats.com . For 36hp & BB Challenge guideline information visit www.burlyb.com . Pit set-up and tech inspection begins September 6th.
Food and showers are nearby at the gas station at the Bonneville Speedway exit and I-80. Trucker showers are available for a minor charge as is ice and other amenities. The Salt Flats Cafe is also located in the building and has great Mexican food at extremely reasonable prices and excellent service. I highly recommend the Salt Flats Cafe! Wendover is just four miles farther west along I-80 and includes a full compliment of Casinos, food, two markets, gas, and fast food outlets. A car wash is located on the town road west of town by the big market. Just turn left on the road that goes to the golf course.
Another camping alternative is the location of the future Bonneville Museum located on the eastern edge of Wendover just past the hill on the eastern freeway (I-80) entrance road. Located right across from the auto parts store, it will again be available for Bonneville fans. I just got off the phone with Wendover City to confirm it's availability and was advised construction on the Bonneville Speedway Museum has not yet started so CAMPING WILL AGAIN BE ALLOWED at the graded and graveled areas of the museum site for both the World of Speed (VW Challenge) in September and Speedweek in August (not a VW venue). Last year two porta potties were on-site and will hopefully be again this year. The Casinos, food and gas are located less than a mile west on the same road.
For those planning on staying in a motel, it is CRITICAL that you make your reservations NOW. Rooms fill up quickly during Bonneville racing events. Above are attachments with contact info and cautions for enjoying yourself on the salt at Bonneville.
I hope this is helpful in your planning.
