Salt Flat Racing

This is a global discussion group for all VW owners and enthusiasts that are interested in salt flat racing and land speed records, it is open for all to join and participate in.

Salt flat racing is currently carried out at a few locations world wide - the most famous of which is Lake Bonneville in North West Utah, where three or four events are held anually. Australia is host to the Annual Speedweek event at Lake Gairdner in the Gawler Ranges of South Australia (See picture above), and South Africa is currently putting together an event at Verneukpan where Malcolm Campbell broke the world land speed record during 1929.

The group aims to promote salt flat racing for aircooled Volkswagens, and provide a place where people can exchange ideas, stories and photos of cars, events and anything related to salt flat racing and it\\'s history.

We are also currently promoting an Australian 36hp challenge event for Speedweek held at Lake Gairdner.

    Speedweek 2014 cancelled
      Sunday, 10 August 2014

Sad news. Bonneville Speedweek cancelled due to water on the track. I know that there are a few Aussies that traveled stateside to visit the event - a long way to go to not see anything - they must be very disappointed.

Here's the release from the SCTA.

"The SCTA Board is currently on the salt, and has determined that the standing water will not dry in time for us to hold our annual Speed Week event. The Board is also discussing the possibility of extending our next event - World Finals (Sep 30 - Oct 3) into a full week of racing as a sort of delayed Speed Week. We Thank You all for your patience and understanding. We look forward to seeing you at our next event."

  • Right. Time to think about getting ready for next years Speed week. Decided to junk the blog block type 4 turbo in favour of one of my 1600 supercharged engines. Should be much much quicker to put together and hopefully will be a good advertisement for the blower kits. Only 8 months to go. Should piss it in.

Bit of a shame but that's just how things go. It looks like Steve Muller, Glen Torrens and a few other VWs will be in attendance, so good luck guys be safe and more importantly be fast!!

    G'day Challengers

The weather continues to plague the final land speed racing events with the World of Speed, World Finals, Mike Cooks High Speed Shootout and the October El Mirage Dry Lake events all being canceled. Fortunately, with the advent of mile events around the U.S. under the auspices of the East Coast Timing Association (E.C.T.A.) in Ohio, and the Mojave Mile and Magnum in California have provided venues for the VW Challengers to exercise their mounts and test this years tuning improvements. And yes, some new 36hp Challenge records were set at both events. Below are the results for the VW racers:

    E.C.T.A. at Wilmington, Ohio (September)

     1.  John Finn                                     113.4644      84 Rabbit                  8383 G/GSS        2000cc Turbocharged WC

     2. Tom Bruch/Gaylen Anderson        128.9398      69 Ghia Coupe          9031 NA36          1378cc Turbocharged 36hp

NEW 36hp Challenge NA36Ghia Record                    Brukrasa Single Port

Tom entered the car and engine combination in three different E.C.T.A. classes in which it met the rules and after making three

separate 128 mile per hour passes with his 36hp engine Ghia, he had put his name in the E.C.T.A. record book three different times.

Below are his new E.C.T.A. class records:

128.9398mph        HBGC Record     Under 1500cc Blown Gas Coupe(all makes of cars!)

                                            128.1686mph        H/CBGC Record Under 1500cc "Classic-pre1981) Blown Gas Coupe(all makes of cars!)

128.2782mph        NA36 Record     E.C.T.A. sanctions four individual 36hp engine classes for Volkswagens

                                                                                                   They include SS(Stone Stock 36)

                                                                                                                        K36(vintage supercharged 36)

                                                                                                                        DSS(dual carburetor 36)

                                                                                                                 and NA36(turbocharged 36)

     3. Bill Hatfield                                 114.272        99 Mexican Bug        2007 DSS36        1602cc Dual Weber 48 IDA Carbs on Wolfsburg West D/P Heads

                                                             NEW ECTA  DSS Record

Running revised cylinder heads and carburetors tuned by his new crew Bill just missed beating the DSS36Bug record he currently holds by less

         than 1 mile per hour.

    4. Barry Jecewski                               78.7953      74 Super Beetle         9200   G/GRS       1585cc Big Block with a single 2 BBL Weber Carburetor

    5. Steven Jecewski                            77.1870      74 Super Beetle          9200A G/GRS       1585cc Big Block with a single 2 BBL Weber Carburetor

This was Barry and Steve's first land speed racing event with their beautiful red Super Beetle. Improvements are already in the works for 2014.

MOJAVE MILE/MAGNUM at Mojave, California (October)

    1. Dick Beith                                       DNR          68 Bug "Bugliner"        3601 150 Club    1585cc Big Block Turbo F.I. Intercooled

Sadly Dick was just 20 miles short of Mojave on the treacherous Tehachapi Pass when the transmission went out in his tow vehicle keeping

him from being able to race at Mojave. He indicated he will return to Mojave for their spring event to tune the Bugliner for next years USFRA

World of Speed event at Bonneville.

    2. Juan Cole                                        87.4           65 Bug                        617  SS36          1192cc Stone Stock

                                                                                Bonneville Herbie

Over the winter Juan rebuilt his 36hp engine and made gearing changes in the transmission (watch for a future Challenge ENEWS with ALL of the details

on the upgrades which allowed Bonneville Herbie to set the new Stone Stock 36hp Bug record. These changes allowed both Juan and his racing partner

Bryan Houston to set and then reset the record in Herbie five times running with a strong tailwind on the Mojave Magnum one and one half mile long track!

    3. Bryan Houston                                88.4           65 Bug                       617  SS36          1192cc Stone Stock

Bonneville Herbie on a 1 1/2 mile track and up to 20 mph tail wind

4.Bryan Houston                              153.6           70 Ghia                      643  BB              2287cc Big Block with Dual 48 IDA Webers

Late Night Aircooled on a 1 1/2 mile track  with up to 20 mph tail wind

     5.Matthew Kenney                             80.4           64/74 Beetle               621  "1" Club     1192cc  Stone Stock 36hp engine

Air Cooled Research on both the 1 and 1 1/2 mile tracks

Driven to and from race 180 miles each way (way to go Matthew! ! ! )

Car features 74 Super Beetle curved windshield body fitted to a 64 standard beetle chassis

and front standard beetle clip. Improved aerodynamics allowed the SS36 engine to exceed

his best Bonneville speed by five miles per hour.

Matthews story: Got in at about 8-ish, we left Mojave a little after 5. I feel like I've been driving all day.......oh wait.....I have been driving all day! My ride for the car didn't pan out so we did plan "B", I drove it there (it's only about 180 miles) with my wife following me in a rental car with all my stuff for the car. I did about 60 to 62mph all the way there at about 32mpg (24.5 venturi). We all got through tech that evening. After the morning briefing and track drive we were all off and running (Brian, Juan, and myself). Unfortunately Dick didn't show with his car.........I really wanted to see it run!  I started with just the mile run instead mile and a half to see where I wanted the tune.....I had left here tuned for 750ft, Mojave is at about 3000ft. I finally got my 80mph on the one mile and moved over to the one and a half, those lines were moving faster to get to the starting line. Juan's first pass on the one and a half mile run was over 85mph! He was very happy. I think Brian's first pass on the same track in the Ghia was 127(?) I think. I just could not get more than 4200 rpm out of the car on either track, which is about 80mph. Later in the day the wind changed enough to make a side sheer and not a direct tailwind as it was first thing in the morning.......the last couple passes I really felt it. It was a really good day out even with the wind. It struck us kind of strange that more of the street rod types were not there, although the motorcycle crowd had it dialed in (one woman did 243mph on her bike). For a first time deal for me I thought it was a good venue that was well organized. We finished the day with the drive home at about 70-72mph after I stuck my flat lander jets back in the carburetor. My first four runs were at the one mile mark. After the tune felt right, I did the one and a half thinking I'd do a better time. About the same top speed depending on the wind, so no real big difference (I thought there would be a difference too). With the seven runs I did I now have a list of about a dozen adjustments to make to the car and drive train so it was well worth the money and time spent. I really liked the digital final speed readout that you could see from the pits.

    6. Juan Cole                                     153.2            70 Ghia                     643A2              2287cc Big Block with dual Weber 48 IDA carburetors

Late Night Aircooled on a 1 1/2 mile track with up to a 20 MPH tail wind

FOOTNOTE: Mike Cooks "High Speed Shootout" (in September and again in October)

This event following the rained out World of Speed was also canceled after two additional subsequent delays where they had hopes the water on the course would dry. Sadly, continuing rainstorms hit the salt flats and prevented their ability to provide the 400 and 500 mile per hour streamliners a safe nine mile course from which to make any passes. Since a five mile track was available, the Volkswagen factory backed Car & Driver Magazine entry driven by Tony Swan and built by Richard Holdener, was allowed to make tuning runs and saw a top speed of 165 miles per hour. This was not last years Jetta Hybrid but a new production based race car using the new Beetle TSi platform with a 2 liter turbocharged engine running in G/BGC.

    Commentary:

After the Mojave Mile and Mile and a Half event, the question was asked about the various length courses the 36hp and VW Challenge speed records are taken from. Essentially, the length of the track, like headwinds and tailwinds, are not considered even though they can have an outcome on the top speed that goes into the Volkswagen Land Speed History I maintain. Dick Beiths original records were set on three mile tracks so we do not differentiate on the length of the track. 1/2, 1, 1 1/2 and 3 mile are all legal as long as the event is overseen and timed by a sanctioning body using timing light equipment with paper read outs. No GPS!

In reality, it is impossible to factor in all the minute variables that separate one race from another even though I routinely receive requests that a specific category be added based on this fact or that feature. These records are just a carrot. The real reward is you achieving your personal best or PB speed with your Volkswagen and then reaching forward to improve upon your VW's speed at the next event. If you beat a previous top speed, that just makes it all the sweeter.

Over the next month three more land speed events will occur. The Texas Mile is this weekend and the final SCTA El Mirage Dry Lake event and Australia's Snowy Mountain 1000 will both take place in November. If you are racing, race safe and if you are not, please try to attend as spectators to support you local racers.

Until then, for the fun of it, that is the Challenge!

    G'day Challengers

I wanted to pass on the following Facebook link for you to check out and hopefully place on your "watch" list. The car shown is a very historic 36hp engine powered 1955 Volkswagen bug that has been driven "around the world" on three different documented occasions and will be driven from northeast Canada to Bonneville this year to race in the 36hp Challenge at the USFRA's World of Speed. The man behind this challenge is Emmanuel "Manu" Thuillier along with a lot of supporting friends and family.

Follow Manu and his progress with the construction of the engine and his journey west. The link can be found here:

    Camping and Food at Bonneville
      Friday, 05 July 2013

Original message fro Burly Burlille 36hp Mailing List

    G'day VW Challengers

For those coming to the World of Speed this September to race or watch the 36hp and Big Block VW Challengers, FREE camping will be available at "bend in the road", which is located on the only road to and from the salt. Camping at the future site for the Bonneville Speedway Museum on the east side of Wendover will also be available. "Bend" is located about one mile north on the Bonneville Speedway exit about three miles east of Wendover on I-80 and is situated on mud-flats amongst the sage brush. If it is not rainy or threatening rain, it is a great location and when I camp out, I too stay at the "Bend" if the weather is DRY. But if it rains, even a little bit, the flats turn to slick clay mud and you will be stranded, even if your vehicle is just 10 feet from the pavement. Getting pulled out by the local Mud-Cat can cost $400.00 so watch the weather before deciding to camp there.

Due to the threat of mud with rain, many folks have taken to the higher scrub areas a mile above "Bend" to the north west. You can find this area at the "Bend" by turning left on the paved road which heads off to the foothills. You will have plenty of companions camping their.

    Now Less Than 70 Days Away-GET READY……………………..

Sept 7-10  World of Speed (130 MPH Club and 36hp & BB Challenge). One mile standing start time trial (along with unlimited top speed streamliners and hot rods on the long eight mile course) at the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats, Wendover, UT. All VW racers and spectators welcome. For information visit www.saltflats.com . For 36hp & BB Challenge guideline information visit www.burlyb.com . Pit set-up and tech inspection begins September 6th.

Food and showers are nearby at the gas station at the Bonneville Speedway exit and I-80. Trucker showers are available for a minor charge as is ice and other amenities. The Salt Flats Cafe is also located in the building and has great Mexican food at extremely reasonable prices and excellent service. I highly recommend the Salt Flats Cafe! Wendover is just four miles farther west along I-80 and includes a full compliment of Casinos, food, two markets, gas, and fast food outlets. A car wash is located on the town road west of town by the big market. Just turn left on the road that goes to the golf course.

Another camping alternative is the location of the future Bonneville Museum located on the eastern edge of Wendover just past the hill on the eastern freeway (I-80) entrance road. Located right across from the auto parts store, it will again be available for Bonneville fans. I just got off the phone with Wendover City to confirm it's availability and was advised construction on the Bonneville Speedway Museum has not yet started so CAMPING WILL AGAIN BE ALLOWED at the graded and graveled areas of the museum site for both the World of Speed (VW Challenge) in September and Speedweek in August (not a VW venue). Last year two porta potties were on-site and will hopefully be again this year. The Casinos, food and gas are located less than a mile west on the same road.

For those planning on staying in a motel, it is CRITICAL that you make your reservations NOW. Rooms fill up quickly during Bonneville racing events. Above are attachments with contact info and cautions for enjoying yourself on the salt at Bonneville.

I hope this is helpful in your planning.

    To All VW Challengers

OK, speed freaks, it's time to get ready for the BEST standing mile/1.5-mile event in the country! We've been busy getting ready for the upcoming Mojave Mile AND Magnum combo event which will feature, for the first time, both 1-mile AND 1.5-mile tracks! Or, as a famous movie quote goes, "dogs and cats, living together, mass hysteria!"

    Registration opens July 8, 2013

    at

All information regarding Registration and fees, Rules, Forms, and supplemental information can be found at this link:

    http://www.mojavemile.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=13&Itemid=13

At this event, you will be able to choose between either distance, and you can switch from one distance to another whenever you choose! That's right -- run a mile, then run a 1.5, then back to a mile, your choice! We will offer 200 mph Club (and above) shirts for BOTH distances, so if you are a little short in the mile of your goal, switch to the longer course for that extra speed boost.

To make this all work, we will be using two separate Starting Lines and one Finish line. We will be running both distances all the time, and BJ, our "Grid Diva," will make sure everyone gets a fair shake at running in the order in which they present themselves at Grid.

Tech requirements for both distances remain the same as always -- you and your car/bike must meet the tech requirements for the speed you want to go, no matter what distance you are running. So, if you are a little too fast in the 1.5 mile course to stay within Tech (say, an A1 car exceeding 175 mph in a 1.5 mile), you can run the 1-mile length flat out and stay within your tech speed.

Marno and the Red House BBQ gang will again be there to serve us that delicious grub, and we will have the VP Fueler there for nearly every kind of race gas you might need.

Please help us out by forwarding/reposting this information to all of your racer friends, forums, and car clubs. We can't wait to see all of our old veterans again, and look forward to meeting a whole new crop of mile racers!

    Mike, Keith, & Marsha

    and the whole MKM Crew!!

    G'day Challengers

The USFRA held there monthly meeting last night in Salt Lake City and I drove down to find out the latest and the greatest. The best news was scraping of the race course has begun and the salt is looking good. To date, they have received around 75 pre-entries so if you are coming out, be sure you copy the entry form atwww.saltflats.com and get your entry in.

When you come to this years World of Speed we will have the 36hp Challenge "Newport Trophy" on display. The trophy commemorates the fastest speed set each year on the Bonneville Salt Flats by a 36hp engine racer going all the way back to 1959 and Phil Freudiger, the first fellow to speed a Volkswagens wheels across Bonneville. Here is a preview of the Newport Trophy.

Ronnie Feitlesen of Arizona is finishing his Speedwell "Pepco" Supercharged Formula V lakester to try and wrest the fifty year old record away from Dick Beith. Dicks speed in 1963 was 129.68 mile per hour in a similarly Pepco powered lakester. Take a look at the progress Ronnie has made below.

It's beautiful Ronnie and we look forward to seeing you on the salt.

A few VW Challenge races have already been held, including the Australian Speedweek where Steve Muller set a new Type 2 big block top speed record of 117.878 mph, the Texas Mile where Greg Silkenson bumped his Ghia's speed up to 140.7 and the ECTA events in Ohio where a new VW racer, Rudy Bahnsen showed up with his Stone Stock 1600 and turned a fast 95.097 miles per hour. His 70 bug is pictured below.

Another new VW coming to the World of Speed this September is this beautiful Super Beetle powered by a Blackline Racing (formerly called A.C.E.) big block engine. The owner is Richard Luna, who you might remember brought the first Volksrod to Bonneville a couple of years ago.

A couple of SCTA El Mirage dry lake events have now taken place and Mike Fredman from Arizona went out and got his Jake Raby built Porsche 912 powered 69 Ghia dusty with a top speed of 117.579 miles per hour. I need to share the fantastic photo taken by Stewart Harnick showing Mike at speed across the lake bed.

And don't forget, the first European land speed event is going to be held in England in just over a month. The inaugural event will be held in conjunction with the annual motorcycle LSR race at Elvington Air Base. To date, nine VW's will hit the cement and will include Larry Monreals historic Bonneville Ghia, a SSS36 powered belly tanker and this beautiful 55 bug which Hans Mueller-Daum will bring over from Germany.

Walter DeVette from Belgium has been leading the charge to make the European event happen and I would like to express my personal thanx to him for bringing the UK and all of Europe into the truly International 36hp and VW Big Block Challenge.

Finally, in addition to the Wolfsburg West Contingency Award outlined in an earlier e-newsletter and the Newport Trophy shown above, do not forget the challenge that has been put forth by the aforementioned Steve Muller from down under. He has issued a Challenge to any VW powered pre 67 splittie bus to take his new 117 mph record away from him. If you can accomplish that task, his company Volksmuller, will send a substantial cash award of a couple of hundred big ones to the US for you to toast your successful effort.

Okay, that's enough news for awhile, or until next week, whichever comes first. Everyone enjoy a great Independence holiday and keep thrashing on your Challenge racers. I look forward to hearing about your success across the pond and watching you meet your speed goals in Ohio, Maine and at Bonneville.

Until then, may the Speed be with you. And please, keep me up to date on your VW racing effort.

    G'day Friends of the Challenge

The first land speed racing event of 2013 for VW's just ended down in Australia this past week. After two years of rain-outs, the event was rescheduled to February from March and the result was dry and hot weather. Temps reached 111 degrees fahrenheit but the rain stayed away and Speedweek was a resounding success with 261 full competition runs and 380 tuning runs. Speedweek in OZ saw the first ever Type 3 compete in land speed racing anywhere around the world along with a new Big Block Type 2 speed record. Steve Muller of Team Ratmuller from Sydney, drove his 2800cc Type 4 powered 57 Kombi called the Roo Shooter (it is a rat bus that was formerly used to hunt Kangaroos!) to the amazing speed of 117.878 miles per hour, surpassing the 109 mph record set by Jason Lang of Wolfgang International just this past September.

All the known speeds are listed below and I am still awaiting additional information from the DLRA on two of the unposted speeds as well as engine details of the VW competitors.

    2013    C Eddy Findlay                68.300        70 Type 3 Fastback   971 G/Pro           __?__cc                   Australia

The corroded surface of Steve's Kombi makes you wonder how fast he could have gone with a good wax job! Since Steve has just captured and taken the Big Block Type 2 fastest speed down under, he wants to challenge all the Big Block Type 2 racers in the USA to go to Bonneville this year and take it back. To that end, Team Ratmuller is offering a $250.00 reward to the fastest BBT2 racer who can beat his speed at World of Speed on the Bonneville salt flats this coming September (those Aussie boy's have a "very competitive" nature for sure! ! !).

As the stats posted above show, John Weninger drove his beautiful 56 oval window Stone Stock 36 Bug (SS36 Bug) to a new top salt flats speed with a pass of 78.332 miles per hour. While he did not best the 82.4 overall record speed of Dan Durie, he did beat Dans 2013 Bonneville speed by just over one half mile per hour. The SS36 categories are one of the most contested classes in the 36hp Challenge and these incremental increases show how competitive the SS categories can be.

Congratulations to all the DLRA Speedweek racers. The next two races will be the TEXAS Mile in Beeville on March 22 & 24 and the ECTA's Ohio Mile in Wilmington on April 27 & 28. I plan to be at Wilmington in April to see this new venue that has received such good revues. See you on the "tarmac" in April.

Till then, may the Speed be with you.

    G'day VW Challengers

The 2012 World of Speed was a rousing success, despite occasional rain showers and downtime on the course. Ten new VW records were set or established by 37 driver/engine/class combinations. Below are the top speeds achieved by each of the drivers.

And heres your heads up, next years World of Speed will be held between September 7th and 10th, 2013, so you can start planning your vacation time now.

Thanx to all the racers, support crews and VW spectators that journeyed to Bonneville. It was a great time.

See you on the salt in 2013.

Press release from the 36hp challenge mailing list

    36hp and all VW Challengers

As of this month, the worlds first Volkswagen speed record holder, Dick Beith, has been recognized by "Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia", under the Bonneville Speedway search engine. Dick set the very first Volkswagen performance record in 1960 at a 77.107 mile per hour two way average speed (with a top one way speed of 80.874 mph) in his 1958 Bug during the SCTA/BNI Speedweek on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. In 1963 Dick returned to Bonneville with a Pepco supercharged 36hp based engine in a "Lakester" style race car designed around the belly tank of a World War 2 airplane and achieved a top speed of 129.68 miles per hour. This is still recognized by the Volkswagen world as the fastest speed ever achieved with a vehicle powered by the our favorite little vintage 36hp air cooled engine, and it is now also recognized by Wikipedia.

This fifty year old 36hp ultimate top speed record will be challenged in 2012 at the U.S.F.R.A.'s World of Speed at Bonneville next week by numerous VW racers including Tom Bruch in a new Gaylen Anderson/Tom Newport built Karmann Ghia coupe with support from Appletree Automotive in Mears, Michigan ( see http://www.appletreeauto.com/Race-for-the-record.html for their Race For The Record updates). And Dick is still competing with a new 40hp based Big Block Volkswagen engine, this year bringing the Eaton supercharged 1450cc powerplant in his highly modified 1968 Volkswagen Beetle, the Bugliner. For further information about Dicks early Volkswagen land speed racing efforts you can go to http://www.vdubber.com/video/gallery/Dick-Beith-1961 to view a 1961 Bonneville documentary interview.

To view Dicks listing on the Wikipedia site please visit the link below. He is in some mighty fine LSR company.

Original message from 36hp challenge mailing list

    All VW Challengers

Karl Barnett (SSS1600Bug-107 MPH) recently found a source for 15 inch small diameter V-Rated (to 149 MPH) "street" tires at very good prices. The brand is called Federal Formoza FD1 (from Taiwan) and can be found at:

    http://www.nextag.com/formoza-tire/stores-html   and

    http://www.onlinetires.com/search.php?q+formoza

15 Inch tire prices start around $53.00 and all are low aspect sidewalls which mean they are wider than stock. Most tires are less than 25.0 inches in diameter

This may be a little late for the WOS but a good source for the future.

See you on the salt next week!

    Burly

Burly:   I did find a site Online tires .com that is advertising the 165/45s at a very low price, and specifically labels the V  as a speed rating. The advertised diameter of the 165/50s is 21.6" and the 165/45s is 20.9"!  I have printed out a copy of the Online Tires.com ad and you can be sure I'll be bringing it to B"ville. Tailwinds always. Karl

Karl, the 165 size fits right between the Smarts 155 fronts and 175 rears. You did not mention the brand but this would probably have great potential for both our racers and all VW owners who want big and littles on their rides.

Have you found out any more?

See you in LESS than two weeks...................

    Burly

Beginning in 1991, the speed symbol denoting a fixed maximum speed capability of new tires must be shown only in the speed rating portion of the tire's service description, such as 225/50R16 89S. The most common tire speed rating symbols, maximum speeds and typical applications are shown below:
L 75 mph Not Legal Off-Road & Light Truck Tires
    M 81 mph Not Legal
N 87 mph Not Legal Temporary Spare Tires
    P 93 mph Not Legal
Q 99 mph Not Legal Studless & Studdable Winter Tires
R 106 mph Not Legal H.D. Light Truck Tires
    S 112 mph 36hp Only >99mph Family Sedans & Vans
    T 118 mph 36hp Only >99mph Family Sedans & Vans
    U 124 mph 36hp Only >99mph
    H 130 mph 130 Club Sport Sedans & Coupes
V 149 mph 150 Club Sport Sedans, Coupes & Sports Cars

When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.

W 168 mph 150 Club Exotic Sports Cars
Y 186 mph 150 Club Exotic Sports Cars

While a Z-speed rating still often appears in the tire size designation of these tires, such as 225/50ZR16 91W, the Z in the size signifies a maximum speed capability in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h; the W in the service description indicates the tire's 168 mph, 270 km/h maximum speed.

    225/50ZR16 in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h
    205/45ZR17 88W 168 mph, 270 km/h
    285/35ZR19 99Y 186 mph, 300 km/h

    Matthew Kenney says:

I now have tires for the car, brand new. These are a NEXEN 165/80/15. They are a "T" rated tire (118mph). The only other tire available in a VW sedan size are the ones made by Nankang ("S" rated at 112mph). I've found most tire places don't have your normal ol' 165 radial in stock, and what is out there is drying up (no more KUMHO 165/15s!). Might want to pass that along to all the other racers that have not bought tires yet.........oh, and one last thing. Prices went up too so plan on forking out about $270 for a set of four.

    Greg Urritia found:

Choices in a H or higher rated tire are better from Continental but they are also more expensive.

General has a single V rated tire in 15 inch.
195/55R15, 23.4 inch diameter at $67.56 each under the Racer Contingency  program

H-rated tires that I'm considering from General include
    175/65R15, 24 diameter at $59.59
    205/65R15, 25.5 diameter at $61.23

I was able to come up with another H-Rated Tire (and there aren't many to choose from in a 15 inch). This time I ordered up a pair of 215/65-15 Nankang RX-615.
     26.2 inch diameter, .

I bought a set of H-Rated General Grabber 207/70-15, 26.3 inch diameter tires for our base line rear meats

TIRES and the 36hp Challenge( and 130 Club VW Racers)

                                                                                  Common Question Answers

NOTE: ALWAYS refer to the sanctioning body (USFRAECTA, TEXAS MILE ) rules and regulations for the most current and up to date

guidelines. Information listed below is for general information only and may not represent the most up to date rule changes!

130 Mile Per Hour Club (USFRA) and similar ECTA and TEXAS MILE categories require H-Rated ( to 130 mph ) marked tires in very good condition to be fitted to all four wheels when running in land speed racing events. 36hp engine powered Volkswagens that have not achieved a speed of 100 miles per hour in previous time trials are allowed to run S-Rated ( to 112 mph ) tires up to the time they exceed 100 miles per hour, at which time it is necessary to switch to the higher H rated tires for all remaining passes.

For 2009, rule changes have mandated that all 130 Mile Per Hour Club racers including ALL 36hp Challenge racers install METAL VALVE STEMS in wheels equipped with tubeless tires or TUBES with METAL VALVE STEMS with NUTS inside tube type tires. Be sure to bring your car ALREADY equipped with these updates so you will be able to pass tech inspection. These types of components are NOT READILY AVAILABLE for purchase in the small towns where racing occurs so please come prepared.

    Where to find:

S-Rated 165/80 x 15 tires- Usually 165 x 15 S rated tires, the most common VW size tire can be ordered through your local tire dealers( R-Rated tires are NOT LEGAL in 36hp Racing! Do not order R-Rated tires! ). Allow a week or more for delivery of special order tires( and metal valve stemmed tubes if needed!). Your nearest EMPI accessory dealer can also order S rated tires in 135/145 and 165 x 15 sizes. Contact EMPI at www.empius.com for local dealer contact information. Many tire sources can also be found in HOT VWs, Ultra VWVolks World and VWMA magazines. S-Rated 165/80 x 15 tires can also be purchased from www.tirerack.com and www.cokertire.com via the internet if not available locally.

    http://www.discounttirezone.com/Falken-Ziex-ZE-912_c_336-1.html

H-Rated 15 tires- If your VW is not a 36hp Challenger or you expect to be running your 36hp Challenge VW above 100 miles per hour, street legal Hoosier H-Rated tires are available in a selection of narrow sizes for 15 wheels. Hoosiers Pro Street Radial series tires are designed for rim widths of 5-6 inches and come in diameters from 22.5 to 25.9 inches. In addition, five different manufacturers of drag racing Front Runner tires legal for use on all four wheels in 130 MPH Club street car type events are available through a variety of other sources via the internet and mail-order. The two most common are www.jegs.com and www.summitracing.com . NOTE: Front Runner style tires should NEVER be driven on the street and are NOT LEGAL for street use!

Front Runner 15 tires- Front Runner tires for 15 wheels are available in a wide variety of overall tire diameters ranging from 22 to 27 inches. All Front Runner tires are designed for rim widths of 3.5-4 inches(most VW rims are 4 and 4.5 inches ). When installed on the wider VW rims, the slight spreading effect will make the tire slightly shorter so measuring the circumference of the tire when determining your actual gear ratios will provide greater accuracy in determining theoretical top speed and shift points than using the published diameter alone. Front Runner tires also provide a narrower front profile along with less friction ( i.e. traction ) which will improve your top speed when compared to wider more common street tires. Again, these tires are not street legal and should never be used on public roads or highways!

    Tire Diameter Formula: 165 / 80 x 15 tire

                                    165(tire size) divided by 25.4(formula) = 6.49 inches

                                    6.49 inches times 80(sidewall profile) = 5.192

5.192 times 2(two sidewall heights on each tire) = 10.38 inches

                                    10.38 inches plus 15(wheel rim diameter) = 25.38 inches(tire

                                     diameter)

Moon Disc Hubcaps: Legal in all classes but must be securely fastened with 6 screws if mounted to wheel rim or 3 Dzus fastners if mounted to tabs welded to inner wheel lip.

Caution: If moon disc style hubcap is mounted with screws, inner tubes(with metal valve stems) are highly recommended to prevent slow leaks where tire bead contacts mounting screws.

Wheel rim size: Although 15 inch VW rims are most common, other wheel diameters (13,14,16) can be used in all classes except the 36hp Stone Stock category. Aluminum rims are allowed(except Stone Stock). Optional rim diameters also allow additional H-Rated tires selections.

TIRE PRESSURES:  Tire pressures on the salt should be set at 50 P.S.I. for racing ( front and back). Be sure to adjust your pressures up before coming to race if trailering or adjust PRIOR to tech inspection if driving your VW. This is a SAFETY item to insure tubeless tires do not separate from the wheel bead and also reduces the tires rolling resistance for higher speed.

    Bonneville 2011-3.m4v
Taking Greg's Karman Ghia to Bonneville. 1776cc's naturally aspirated. Best time a little over 102 mph on the 1-mile track. I hadn't realized the minimal traction available on the salt, which naturally limits top speed due to tire slippage.
