This 1970s promotional film, which takes place at Rudy Schmid’s Body Shop, shows viewers how easy and cost effective it is to build your own Dune Buggy. The film goes through all steps from finding the right car as a base, to applying the kit, and driving it around yourself. It features extensive footage of the outside and inside of the VW Beetle and the step-by-step remodeling done on it. The film was directed by Larry Wood, with cinematography by James Underwood and Phil Hagadorn. It was narrated by Jack Shannon with technical assistance by Paul Schmid. Note: it's not clear if Larry Wood is the same man who designed the famed Hot Wheels dune buggy the Baja Bug, but it seems quite likely!

This is the Porsche 356 replica driven and built by Johan Dryselius from Sweden. He was competing in Cash Days at the SCC Event in Norway, but unfortunately torched his head on the first run. He still walked away with the quickest time for a car with the original type1 magnesium engine case, and and a prize from CSP - 'The Magnesium Flash Award', with a time of 9.98 @ 140mph.

Johan also holds the World Record for the world's quickest in the VW Super 1600 Challenge PA Race (PA = Power Adder)! The class is for VW based air cooled 1600 engine with original bore, stroke length and valve size, with a best time of 9.46 @ 151mph.

The car featured is fitted with a 130hp VW air cooled motor but... at 1200lbs, the car is anything but slow.

This VW Dune Buggy project has been kicking around the Theonomics shop for awhile now, and it's time to build it. This is the chassis from a 1973 Volkswagen beetle. the engine is a rebuilt 1600cc Dual Port. I got this VW chassis from the Bradley GT 2 kitcar that I recently turned into a 4x4 offroader(link below). I decided That a good option would be to build a VW dune buggy using all the left over parts. The chassis was cut and shortened 22 inches. I thought it would be a good idea to build a custom roll cage, because we will likely be rolling this thing! This will have a custom made windshield added which was cut from another windshield. Most of the parts are from the original VW Beetle, but I did make some additions like the 8th inch diamond plate aluminum used for floors and side panels, a custom stainless steel battery box, some heavy duty military dodge headlights, International Harvester tail lights, and a bunch of other things here and there.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy seeing it all come together.
