an idea pt2

well a hour or 3 in the shed has shown me that it is feasable. making it work with infinately adjustable phasing between the points is also doable but a lot more complex as the extra space needed for the upper and lower points plates would mean that a spacer would be needed to lift the cap. not something i wanted to do as it is getting a little further away from my intended result. being the guts of a BR25 in a bigcap body. all looking kind of stock.

at the moment i'm not giving up on the idea though as well i like adjustability even if i wouldn't have the knowledge yet to use it.

btw for the twin points i was thinking of using GB504's (i think that is the code) what they sell not for 36hp beetle dist's. both the fixed and adjustable would use these.

i also realized that with the exception of one weight which could possibly be modified from an different one, all of the parts i would need (bar of course a custom points plate) are from either a bigcap or a VJU4 BR8 (stock vacuum advance 36hp) aka no need to buy i complete expensive VJ4 BR25 or 010. this is pending confirmation that the stock BR25 weight set up would cope with the extra friction of 2 pairs of points. the weight is the only possible exception, the stock vaccuum dist has two plates, one is exactly the same and the other is the same but with an extra bit tacked on top. hopefully this could be made and added cheap (or the correct one sourced from someone who rebuilds them).

the hardest bit will be finding a co conspiritor that is good with a lathe and has access to a mill with an adjustable rotating head that allows the object (points plate) to be rotated to precice degrees to make sure it is accurate enough to work.

an idea though is that the points plate could be made with removable point pivot pins, doing this along with multipule sets of points mount holes would allow some adjustability with each opposite set of holes having a slightly different alignment. aka 0 deg offset, 1 deg, 2 deg etc. not infnately adjustable of quickly done, but maybe usefull never the less.

a bead of weld may need to be run under the points cam on the bigcap shaft top, to give enough meat for fix the advance weight pinplate to but really it isn't much comparitivly.

i should prob check if twin could would be legal for SSS class. even if not i kind of like the idea for a vintage speed motor, just for something different (and of course when you're starting with only 36hp every 1/2 a hp counts.

the parts needed are: bigcap body (machined top bush removed and refitted deeper, shaft bushes honed to fit larger dia shaft), shaft (shortened cut to fit on the top of the bottom shaft, welded than fitted with the vju4 weight pin plate), cap and rotor. a VJU4 BR8 bottom shaft, weights (one modded?), weight slide plate, weight springs. the weight pin plate off the bottom of the top shaft plus assorted shims and washers, etc. along with a custom points plate with custom pivot pins as well as a cover plate for the hole left by the vaccum can. it wounds simple when you list it out like that.

i had intended to take lots of pics so this would make sense, but of course got carried away in the moment.

crazy ideas.
