Taking Greg's Karman Ghia to Bonneville. 1776cc's naturally aspirated. Best time a little over 102 mph on the 1-mile track. I hadn't realized the minimal traction available on the salt, which naturally limits top speed due to tire slippage.

This is an in-car video of our second run at World Of Speed 2011. Justin was barely able to keep it straight out of the gates, and we began to drop a cylinder at the 3/4 mile mark course in fourth gear. We ran 114mph at the half mile, and even though we were dropping a cylinder we still ran a 127.5mph in the mile. We ran 2 more runs after this, both slower, and found out that a piece of the head had blown out due to being too thin. We were running a 2332 built from an AS41 case, highly modified 041 head castings, Scat 42X37.5 valves, Auto-Craft 1.4:1 rockers, Scat C75 cam and lightweight lifters (resurfaced by Steve Long Racing Cams), Scat dual valve springs, Mahle 94mm pistons and cylinders custom valve relieved, Scat 84mm Crankshaft and Rods, 1 5/'8" Empi Merged Header, Weber 48 IDA's.

Dick Beith, a high school teacher from Concord, California. Last year Beith spent 55 cents preparing his '56 VW for the Nationals; this covered the cost of a used, second carburetor and of the tubing with which to attach it to the engine. He set the just-mentioned ETS record at 77.107. This year he went all out, investing in a 69.5 mm EMPI strokeI kit and camshaft and a Pepco Rootstype blower. He ported the cylinder heads generously and installed oversize Studebaker valves. To drive the blower he went to a bicycle shop and bought a few dimes' worth of chain and the smallest big sprocket and the largest small sprocket that he could find. This happened to give him a ratio of 2.2 to one which turned out to be just right even though it whirled the blower rotors at 12,000 rpm when the engine was turning 5000. Beith drove the VW to the Salt with the blower chain removed, just letting the rotors windmill in the air stream. Then he snapped the master link in place and clocked 93.97 mph on his first run. Further tuning during the week enabled him to set a new ETS record of 101.69 mph

In 1970, The Blue Flame became the world land speed record holder. It was the last American team to set the world land speed record, and the last on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The car was designed and built by Reaction Dynamics, Inc. (Pete Farnsworth and Dick Keller) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and driven by Gary Gabelich of Long Beach, California. It had a rocket motor using liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen peroxide as the fuel. The world record set was 630.388 mile per hour in the kilometer, also the first automobile record over 1,000 kilometers per hour - at 1,014.656 kilometers per hour. That record was finally broken in 1997. Watch the YouTube video "Speedquest" to see the whole story.
